Helfer is a native of the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis and Elaine Helfer. The two were born in the town of Donalda, Alberta Canada. The parents of her are Dennis and Elaine Helfer. She was a student at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. Three sisters she shared with lived on the family's grain farm. An agent scout spotted Helfer when she was 17 while she was standing in line for a movie.
